Alabama A&M Mourns the Passing of Linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr.
Alabama A&M University is mourning the loss of football student-athlete Medrick Burnett Jr., who passed away on Tuesday, November 26, due to complications from a head injury sustained during a game.
Burnett, a linebacker, was injured during the Magic City Classic game against Alabama State on October 26. Initially, he was considered to be in stable condition, but his condition deteriorated, leading to several brain bleeds and swelling of the brain. According to his sister, Dominece, Burnett underwent a craniotomy as a last resort to try and save his life after experiencing severe pressure for two days.
Originally from Lakewood, California, Burnett attended Mayfair High School before joining the Grambling State University football program in 2023. He transferred to Alabama A&M University during the offseason of 2024, drawn by his connection with defensive assistant coach Cedric Thornton.
Alabama A&M Director of Athletics Dr. Paul A. Bryant expressed the university’s grief, stating, “Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; he was a remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership, and compassion left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.” Burnett appeared in seven games this season, recording a season-best three tackles at Austin Peay.
The university and the athletic community are offering their deepest condolences and support to Burnett’s family, teammates, and coaches. Memorial service arrangements will be announced later.
