Alajuelense Vs Pumas Concacaf Champions Match Preview

Ciudad de México, México – Liga Deportiva Alajuelense is set to face off against Pumas UNAM in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 on March 4, 2025. The match kicks off at 7:36 p.m. at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, with both teams aiming for a crucial victory.

Alajuelense arrived in Mexico on Saturday, preparing systematically to adjust to the altitude and familiarize the coaching staff with local conditions, especially after observing Pumas’ recent match against Chivas, where they recorded their fourth consecutive defeat.

“We respect Pumas, but we aren’t intimidated by their recent struggles,” a member of Alajuelense’s technical staff stated. “We know they have a new coach in Efraín Juárez, which can often mean a resurgence as players want to impress.”

According to game regulations, away goals will act as a tiebreaker in this knockout format, making every goal count even more in determining the outcome.

The match will be broadcast on ESPN and available through the Disney+ app, priced at approximately ¢7,000. Fans can also catch live commentary on Columbia (98.7 FM), Monumental (93.5 FM), and Teletica Radio (91.5 FM).

Anderson Canhoto has recently joined the Alajuelense squad directly from the airport to participate in the match. The only absent player will be Joshua Navarro, who continues to recover from an injury sustained during the national classic.

Coach Alexandre Guimaraes affirmed the team’s readiness but emphasized the importance of scoring, especially in a tournament where visiting goals can play a decisive role. “Our history in the Copa Centroamericana taught us the value of away goals. We must remain focused and take our opportunities when they arise,” Guimaraes said.

Alajuelense boasts a solid performance over its last nine matches, conceding only six goals. “We are confident in our defense, but this match also entails a challenge in attack,” added Guimaraes, stressing the balance needed in their gameplay strategy. They will perhaps adopt a counterattacking approach against Pumas, who may take a more aggressive stance under their new leadership.

Alajuelense’s historical encounters against Mexican teams show the high stakes involved, as they have frequently struggled but also achieved notable victories. This match marks their 10th two-legged series against a Mexican opponent in the CONCACAF Champions League series, with only three qualifying successfully in past encounters.

Meanwhile, club president Joseph Joseph expressed optimism about the team’s chances. “We always aim to compete at this level. The players must give their all. This tournament is significant for us, and advancing depends on our performance,” he remarked.

The anticipation builds as Alajuelense aims for a strong performance against Pumas, marking the first-ever meeting between these two historic clubs. The outcome will be vital, not only for progression in the tournament but also for team morale as they return home for the second leg on March 13.
