Alanna Kennedy Joins Angel City After Departing Manchester City
MANCHESTER, England — Australian defender Alanna Kennedy has signed with Angel City FC in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) after departing Manchester City, both clubs confirmed Tuesday. The 30-year-old center-back, who made 64 appearances for Manchester City, signed a one-year contract with Angel City, with an option to extend through the 2026 season.
Kennedy’s move comes after she was notably absent from Manchester City’s mid-season training camp in Abu Dhabi and their recent Women's Super League (WSL) match against Manchester United. The club initially announced her transfer on social media before deleting the post, with official confirmation following hours later.
“I am really excited to join Angel City and return to the NWSL,” Kennedy said in a statement. “I was inspired by the club’s mission and purpose and I am looking forward to arriving in LA and meeting all my teammates. Equally, I am excited to get to work and contribute to the team’s success on the field.”
Angel City’s sporting director, Mark Parsons, praised Kennedy’s versatility and experience. “Alanna is an experienced defender who brings both leadership and a winning mentality to our team,” Parsons said. “Her international experience with Australia, coupled with her ability to play in multiple defensive positions, makes her a versatile addition to our roster.”
Kennedy, who previously played for NWSL sides Western New York Flash and Orlando Pride, won the Women’s League Cup with Manchester City in 2022. She also boasts 131 caps for Australia, scoring 11 goals, and played a key role in the Matildas‘ fourth-place finish at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
In a farewell Instagram post, Kennedy expressed gratitude for her time in Manchester. “Manchester has been my home for the past three and a half years, and I am leaving with a lot of amazing memories,” she wrote. “I’ve had some real career highlights playing for this team and made some friends for life. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of those who supported me during my time here.”
Angel City did not disclose the transfer fee for Kennedy, who is expected to join the Los Angeles-based club ahead of the 2025 NWSL season.
