HOUSTON, Texas — As the 2025 MLB offseason unfolds, two-time All-Star and World Series champion Alex Bregman remains unsigned, raising questions about the market for the veteran third baseman. Despite his impressive resume, including a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Award, Bregman’s free agency has been marked by uncertainty and a lack of suitors willing to meet his asking price.

Bregman, 30, has been a cornerstone of the Houston Astros since his debut in 2016, compiling a career 132 OPS+ and ranking 12th in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) among all players since that time. However, concerns about his recent performance and ballpark-dependent power have tempered interest from teams. Statcast data suggests that Bregman’s home run totals could decline in less hitter-friendly parks, and his walk rate dropped to a career-low 6.9% in 2024.

“There’s no denying his feel for contact, but we’re not as confident about the other elements,” said one analyst. “His power might play down elsewhere, and his approach at the plate has raised some red flags.”

The Astros, who have moved on by acquiring Isaac Paredes to fill the void at third base, are now watching to see where Bregman lands. Potential fits include the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, and Toronto Blue Jays. The Red Sox, in particular, have been linked to Bregman due to his success at Fenway Park, where he has a .375/.490/.750 slash line with seven home runs in 21 games.

“For what it’s worth, Bregman sure has loved that Green Monster over the course of his career,” noted Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report. Spotrac projects Bregman could command a four-year, $120 million contract, though some teams may hesitate to meet that figure given the current market conditions.

The broader free-agent market has been unusually slow, with nine teams spending less than $5 million this offseason and six teams committing fewer than $30 million in total contracts. This frugality has left top-tier players like Bregman in limbo, as teams weigh the risks and rewards of long-term investments.

As the offseason progresses, Bregman’s future remains uncertain. Whether he lands with a contender or a rebuilding team, his signing will undoubtedly shape the landscape of the 2025 MLB season.
