Alex Eala Faces Tough Loss, Eyes Upcoming Clay-Court Events

OEIRAS, PORTUGAL – Filipino tennis player Alexandra Eala‘s run at the Oeiras Ladies Open concluded on Thursday after a hard-fought match in the Round of 16 against Hungary’s Panna Udvardy. Eala, 19, lost in straight sets, 6–7 (4–7), 4–6, as she transitions into the European clay season and prepares for several significant tournaments ahead, including her first main draw appearance at the French Open.
Despite the recent setback, Eala remains focused and determined as she gears up for the upcoming WTA 1000 events in Madrid and Rome. Currently ranked World No. 73, she is the highest-ranked Filipina singles player in history, rising to prominence after a breakthrough semifinal appearance at the Miami Open last month.
In her match against Udvardy, Eala showed resilience, erasing an early 1-3 deficit in the first set to force a tiebreaker. However, Udvardy, ranked No. 137, capitalized on critical points, ultimately claiming the first set. Eala took an early 2-0 lead in the second set but was unable to maintain her momentum as Udvardy rallied, winning five consecutive games to secure the victory.
“It was a tough match,” Eala said after the loss. “I had my chances to extend the match but I couldn’t convert on crucial points. It’s a learning experience as I prepare for the clay season.”
Alex Eala had previously shown promise earlier in the tournament, scoring a convincing win against her opponent from the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-4, in a rain-delayed second-round match. However, her doubles campaign with partner Katie Volynets also concluded in the Round of 16, where they faced defeat against American duo Christina Rosca and Carmen Corley.
The Oeiras Ladies Open marks the beginning of Eala’s clay season, a key period in her growth as she prepares for the French Open. “Every match is important,” she noted. “Moving forward, I’m excited about the upcoming tournaments where I can continue to improve on clay.”
Eala’s next stop is the WTA 1000 Mutua Madrid Open, starting on April 21. With high expectations and a solid track record, she hopes to build on her performances and make a strong impact in the tournament.
