Alex Formenton Returns to Canada for Personal Reasons
Canadian hockey player Alex Formenton is returning to his home country from Switzerland for personal reasons. The HC Ambri-Piotta, his team in the Swiss National League, announced on Wednesday that Formenton has been granted an indefinite leave of absence. The organization has allowed him to return to Canada, but they have not provided any further details regarding his departure.
Formenton, 24, was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the second round (47th overall) in 2017. In his first full season in the NHL in 2021-2022, he scored 18 goals and accumulated 32 points in 79 games.
Although he became a restricted free agent in July 2022 after the expiration of his entry-level contract, Formenton has not signed a new contract with the Senators. However, he remains on their reserve list, and the club has not yet provided any explanations for this situation.
Formenton joined HC Ambri-Piotta in December 2022 and started his second season in Switzerland last fall. In 24 games so far this season, he has gathered 17 points.
