Alex Jensen Utah Basketball Coach Announcement

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The University of Utah has appointed Alex Jensen as the new head coach for its men’s basketball program, the school announced on Thursday. Jensen, a former Utah player and NBA assistant, steps into the role as the Runnin’ Utes aim to revitalize their basketball reputation.

Jensen, a Utah native, previously won the state’s Mr. Basketball title in 1994 and played for the Utes under Hall of Fame coach Rick Majerus. During his college career, he led the program to four NCAA tournament appearances and was a key player on the team that reached the national championship game in 1998.

Mark Harlan, Utah’s athletics director, expressed enthusiasm about Jensen’s return, saying, “Alex brings with him tremendous experience coaching at the collegiate, NBA, and international levels. He is widely respected for his ability to develop players and teach the game of basketball.” Harlan is confident Jensen will elevate the program and reignite fan engagement.

Jensen’s coaching journey includes a decade with the Utah Jazz and a stint with the Dallas Mavericks under head coach Jason Kidd. His experience in the NBA has seen him help develop numerous successful players, including All-Stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Jensen succeeds Craig Smith, who was dismissed after a disappointing season, finishing with a 65-62 record and failing to reach the NCAA tournament. The Utes have not made a tournament appearance since 2016 and seek to replicate the success of in-state rivals who have recently thrived after coaching changes.

Reflecting on his appointment, Jensen stated, “My basketball journey has been filled with so many people who have shaped me as a coach. I’m thankful for all of the great mentors I’ve had along the way as I embark on this next step to lead Utah Basketball.”

The Runnin’ Utes, currently with a record of 16-14 and 8-11 in Big 12 play, hope to turn their fortunes around with Jensen at the helm. Jensen’s first challenge will be to prepare the team for its upcoming game against BYU, as they look to build momentum for the future.
