Alex Jensen Utah Basketball Head Coach Announcement

SALT LAKE CITY — Former NBA assistant Alex Jensen has been appointed as the new head coach of the University of Utah men’s basketball team, starting immediately. The decision comes after a thorough search process, which indicated Jensen as the frontrunner for the position from the outset.

University of Utah president Taylor Randall and athletics director Mark Harlan announced the news early Tuesday following multiple interviews with promising candidates. Jensen, a former Runnin’ Ute player and assistant coach, has an extensive background in professional basketball, including 12 seasons as an NBA assistant coach, most recently with the Dallas Mavericks.

“We believe that Alex is the ideal person to take our program forward,” Randall said in the official announcement. “His connection to this community and understanding of our culture will be invaluable as we pursue excellence on and off the court.”

Jensen’s coaching career spans 18 years, initiating as an assistant under legendary coach Rick Majerus at Saint Louis University. After playing for the Runnin’ Utes during their celebrated 1998 national championship matchup, Jensen ventured internationally before transitioning to coaching. In the G League, he led the Canton Charge to the top record in 2013, earning G League Coach of the Year honors.

Prior to joining the Mavericks in 2023, Jensen spent ten years with the Utah Jazz, collaborating with high-profile players such as Luka Doncic and Donovan Mitchell. This experience is expected to aid Jensen in reconnecting the Runnin’ Utes with their competitive edge, a goal emphasized by both the Utah administration and local fans.

“This is an exciting time for Utah Basketball,” said Harlan. “Hiring someone with the knowledge and passion for our program is crucial as we aim to return to the NCAA Tournament, and we are confident that Alex can lead us there.”

Jensen’s assignment comes at a pivotal moment for Utah men’s basketball, following a difficult season in which the team struggled in the Big 12 Conference. His return to Utah is viewed as a potential turning point for revitalizing the Runnin’ Utes’ legacy and competitiveness.

Local fans have long advocated for Jensen’s appointment, and many believe that his familiarity with the Utes program and its history will herald a new era of success.

As Jensen embarks on this new chapter, he will be tasked with not only elevating the team’s performance but also re-engaging the fan base and instilling a renewed sense of pride in Utah Basketball.
