Las Vegas, Nevada — Alex Pietrangelo, a standout defenseman for the Vegas Golden Knights, has withdrawn from the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off due to an undisclosed ailment. The tournament, which features top teams from Canada, the United States, Sweden, and Finland, will take place from February 12 to 20 in Montreal and Boston.
The 35-year-old veteran was originally named to Canada’s 23-man roster, aiming to add another gold medal to his illustrious career, which already includes two Stanley Cup championships and a gold medal at the Olympics. However, on January 26, Pietrangelo decided to prioritize his health. The Golden Knights stated he is “dealing with an ailment and will instead prepare for the remainder of the regular season.”
Pietrangelo has been an essential player for the Golden Knights this season, logging an average of 22 minutes and 35 seconds of ice time, the most among his teammates. He has contributed 25 points in just 53 games played prior to the All-Star break. Despite not being able to compete in the international tournament, Pietrangelo has remained active in NHL games, recording significant playing time.
“It’s a tough call to make, but sometimes you have to focus on your long-term health,” Pietrangelo said in a statement released by the team. “I wish my teammates the best in the tournament.”
With Pietrangelo’s withdrawal, the Los Angeles Kings’ Drew Doughty was announced as his replacement. Doughty, who missed the first 47 games of the season due to a broken ankle, made his return on January 29 and has since been eager to compete internationally. “It’s exciting to be called up so quickly after coming back from injury,” he said. “I’m ready to give my best for Team Canada.”
Throughout his career, Doughty has established himself as a key player for Canada, winning two Olympic gold medals and a World Cup title. Having played significant minutes upon his return, including games exceeding 31 minutes, Doughty appears fit and prepared for the challenge ahead.
The 4 Nations Face-Off introduces a new tournament format, replacing the NHL’s traditional All-Star Game events. It aims to showcase elite international hockey while engaging fans eager for top-level competition. Participation is exclusive to NHL players, meaning that only the strongest rosters from these four nations will contend for the championship.
As the tournament approaches, Team Canada is expected to practice and finalize their lineup, focusing on maximizing their chances for victory with Doughty now on board. The team’s first game will be against Sweden on February 12.
