Alex Rodriguez Calls for More Youth Baseball Practice

NEW YORK — Baseball legend Alex Rodriguez recently shared his views on youth baseball development, emphasizing the need for more practice and fundamental training. In a video titled “The Issue With Youth Baseball Today,” Rodriguez reflects on the current state of the game and its younger athletes.
Rodriguez, who played in the majors from 1994 to 2016, argues that while today’s young players are stronger and faster than ever, the fundamentals of the game are suffering. “I think players today have never been better, stronger, faster. The things they can do, it’s incredible,” he stated. “But the fundamentals are not as good. I don’t think they’re being taught the right way. I don’t think they’re being taught enough.”
He highlights that youth athletes often play multiple games each week, sometimes as many as three to four on weekends. “When I grew up, we practiced six days a week to play one game. There was more of an emphasis on fundamentals and just honing your craft,” he said. Rodriguez believes that this shift in focus can hinder young players’ overall development.
In today’s environment, many children specialize in just one sport at a young age, which often leads them to prioritize competition over practice. This change has created a culture where players seek visibility through showcases and club teams, rather than developing essential skills through regular practice.
Despite the high level of physical performance in major league statistics, Rodriguez expresses concern about how these young players are developing their skills. While some metrics have remained stable, he points out that aspects like baserunning and baseball intelligence have not received the attention they require from players and coaches alike.
Meanwhile, in the Yankees‘ camp, the team has made roster moves, including optioning right-handed pitcher Allan Winans to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday night to make space for pitcher Clarke Schmidt, who is returning from injury. Schmidt’s return is eagerly anticipated as the Yankees look to recover from early-season struggles and injuries that have affected their rotation.
Winans, who was called up on Saturday to replace starter Marcus Stroman, has not made an appearance in the majors during this stint. He has a career ERA of 7.20 over 40 big-league innings and a more respectable 3.20 ERA across 258 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level. The Yankees will look to complete a sweep against the Kansas City Royals in their upcoming game.
