ATLANTA, Georgia — Alex Verdugo, once a struggling outfielder for the New York Yankees, has signed a contract with the Atlanta Braves as he seeks to revive his career. After a challenging season with the Yankees, where he failed to meet expectations, Verdugo entered free agency this offseason.

The Braves officially signed Verdugo on March 20, but under the condition that he would start in the minor leagues. Verdugo joined the Braves at a critical moment; the team was struggling, holding a record of 5-13 at the time of his arrival. However, Verdugo quickly turned things around, helping Atlanta win 16 out of their next 24 games, pushing them back to .500 before facing the Washington Nationals.

Despite this positive impact, Verdugo’s future on the Braves roster is uncertain. The return of superstar Ronald Acuña Jr., who is recovering from a torn ACL, presents a challenge. Acuña Jr. recently began a minor league rehab assignment and could rejoin the Braves within three weeks.

Should Acuña Jr. return to form, Verdugo might find himself battling for playing time. Competing with him for a spot is Eli White, who is enjoying a standout season with an .842 OPS. Atlanta manager Brian Snitker has shown hesitance towards trusting White despite his performance, often placing him low in the batting order.

Verdugo, a former second-round pick in the 2014 draft, was a significant part of the trade that sent Mookie Betts to the Boston Red Sox. His past accolades as a sought-after prospect showcase his potential, but his current performance, highlighted by a .640 OPS, keeps him vulnerable as Atlanta’s roster dynamics shift.

The outlook for Verdugo remains complicated as he aims to secure his place on a competitive Braves team.
