Alexander Nikishin Debuts for Hurricanes in Crucial Playoff Game

WASHINGTON (AP) — Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Alexander Nikishin made his NHL debut Thursday night during Game 5 of the team’s second-round playoff series against the Washington Capitals.
The 23-year-old Russian skater participated in a solo warmup lap before the game, a tradition for players making their first appearance in the league. Nikishin skated without a helmet before rejoining his teammates on the ice.
Nikishin, a top prospect for the Hurricanes, practiced with veteran defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere during the line rushes. His inclusion in the game came after fellow defenseman Jalen Chatfield was ruled out due to an undisclosed injury sustained during Game 4.
Chatfield’s injury led Coach Rod Brind’Amour to confirm that Nikishin would only play if Chatfield was unable to perform. Carolina reported that Chatfield felt discomfort after tweaking an undetermined part of his body in Tuesday’s game, leaving the Hurricanes with Nikishin as a key addition.
Nikishin transitioned from the KHL this spring after signing his first NHL contract last month. He left SKA Saint Petersburg, where he mutually terminated his deal to join the Hurricanes in North America.
The Hurricanes hold a 3-1 series lead going into this playoff match, making Nikishin’s debut even more significant as the team looks to advance in the postseason.
