Australia’s Alexei Popyrin showcased exceptional performance as he overcame Pedro Martinez in the second round of the US Open, winning decisively with a score of 6-2, 6-4, 6-0.

Popyrin’s victory, achieved in just under two hours, marked his return to the last 32 of the tournament for the first time since 2021. His remarkable confidence stems from recent success, including clinching his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Montreal.

Seeded No. 28 at this major tournament, Popyrin has demonstrated an impressive form, winning eight of his last nine matches on North American hard courts. The upcoming match could see him compete against defending champion Novak Djokovic, who will face Laslo Djere in the next session.

In his post-match interview, Popyrin expressed relief at not having to play five sets in the extreme heat conditions. He stated, “It was hot. I’m just glad I got it done in straight sets – I don’t know if I would have made five sets in this heat.”

Popyrin recalled his previous encounters with Djokovic this year, where he had managed to challenge the renowned player. “I had chances in both matches, and it’s just a matter of taking those chances and playing good on the big points,” he reflected.

In contrast, several other Australian players faced defeats on day three, including Rinky Hijikata, who lost to Grigor Dimitrov. Former quarter-finalist Ajla Tomljanovic and qualifier Maya Joint also exited the tournament.

This year’s US Open has seen a significant Australian presence, with 10 players reaching the second round, marking a remarkable achievement for the nation’s tennis contingent.
