Ali Wong Shares Romantic Journey in New Comedy Special
Comedian Ali Wong detailed her romantic experiences following her divorce from ex-husband Justin Hakuta in her new Netflix comedy special “Ali Wong: Single Lady,” which debuted on October 8. During the special, Wong humorously recounted the period of her life when she re-entered the dating scene, drawing from her personal stories to entertain the audience.
The 42-year-old comic highlighted how she had unexpectedly become a subject of romantic interest from various men after reports of her divorce became public. “I didn’t expect the news of my divorce to be so widespread and public,” Wong said. “I felt really embarrassed and ashamed, but I didn’t realize that all of these media outlets were acting like a Bat-Signal, letting all potentially interested men know that I was suddenly available.”
Wong disclosed an amusing encounter with her current boyfriend, revealed to be actor Bill Hader, whom she met at previous dinner gatherings and later reconnected through a mutual friend. After receiving the news of her divorce, Hader had expressed his long-time admiration for Wong, leading to a unique courtship involving multiple floral surprises as she traveled across Europe.
According to Wong, the romantic gestures included lavish bouquets of flowers being delivered to her during her visits to London, Amsterdam, Cologne, and Copenhagen. “I arrive in London and discovered that this man had sent me a bouquet of flowers,” she described, adding humorously that her friends reacted differently to these generous gifts. Her female friends found it sweet, whereas her male friends were more skeptical, questioning Hader’s intentions.
Wong’s special also touched on her continued relationship with Hakuta, with whom she shares two children. She described their post-divorce friendship as an example of maintaining amicable relations despite separation, stating, “Divorce gets a really bad reputation and it can sound really scary and full of acrimony. But then just look at me as an alternate example of how it can be: I’m best friends with my ex-husband.”
The comedian’s exploration of her romantic and personal life is not only central to her comedy routine but also resonates with audiences who appreciate her candid and humorous take on the complexities of relationships. Wong and Hader’s relationship was confirmed publicly in April 2023, after they reportedly reconnected following a brief dating period in 2022.
