Bledisloe Cup 2024 Wellington

The All Blacks secured a decisive 33-13 victory over the Wallabies in the Bledisloe Cup match held at Sky Stadium in Wellington. Despite a strong start by the Wallabies, who took an early lead, they were unable to maintain momentum as the All Blacks mounted a powerful comeback in the second half.

This match originally began with promise for Australia as they attacked vigorously from the onset, putting New Zealand under considerable pressure. An early try by Fraser McReight set the tone for the Wallabies, and two penalty goals by Noah Lolesio gave Australia a 13-12 lead as the first half drew to a close.

New Zealand quickly responded, however, with Caleb Clarke scoring a decisive try just before the break, leaving the All Blacks ahead 19-13 at halftime. In the second half, New Zealand’s defense proved impenetrable, reducing Australia’s opportunities while Tamaiti Williams and Clarke added further tries to their tally, maintaining the Wallabies scoreless in the final 40 minutes.

Will Jordan‘s performance was notably influential for the All Blacks, particularly in their incisive second-half attacks. Expressing disappointment, Wallabies captain Harry Wilson commented, “I thought our first 40 was really good. We showed up, we started fast but we struggled with possession in the second half.”

The game’s outcome marks another setback for the Wallabies under new coach Joe Schmidt, as they concluded the Rugby Championship having won only a single match in the competition, finishing at the bottom of the ladder.

“We didn’t start too well but I’m really pleased with how we finished,” remarked All Blacks captain Scott Barrett regarding his team’s resilient performance that ultimately secured their victory and ended their previous poor record in Wellington.

Looking ahead, the Wallabies face a challenging tour of the northern hemisphere with matches against England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, as they continue to develop under Schmidt’s leadership.
