Almere City Holds FC Groningen to 0-0 Draw in Eredivisie Clash
Almere City, under the guidance of new coach Jeroen Rijsdijk, secured a hard-fought 0-0 draw against FC Groningen in a lackluster Eredivisie match on Sunday. The result, which left both teams frustrated, highlighted the struggles of two of the league’s lowest-scoring sides.
The match at Groningen’s Euroborg stadium saw little action in the first half, with both teams struggling to create meaningful chances. ESPN analyst Anco Jansen expressed his disappointment during halftime, stating, ‘This is not how football should be played. I might as well have stayed home.’
The second half saw more urgency from Groningen, with Stije Resink, Brynjolfur Willumsson, and Thijs Oosting coming close to breaking the deadlock. However, Almere City goalkeeper Nordin Bakker stood firm, making several crucial saves to deny the hosts.
Mats Seuntjens, making his return to the Eredivisie as a substitute for Groningen, nearly made an impact but was unable to find the back of the net. Oosting’s header hitting the post in the closing stages summed up Groningen’s frustration.
Almere City, content with a point, defended resolutely throughout the match. The result leaves both teams in their respective positions on the table, with Almere remaining 17th and Groningen in 13th place.
