Amanda Nunes Ufc Comeback Fight Announcement

NEWARK, N.J. — Amanda Nunes, widely regarded as the greatest female mixed martial artist of all time, appears ready to make a return to the UFC Octagon. The 35-year-old former two-division champion hinted at a comeback during a press conference ahead of UFC 316 set for June 7, where the bantamweight title will be contested between Julianna Peña and Kayla Harrison.

Nunes, who retired at UFC 289 in June 2023 after defending her title for the eighth time, enjoyed a prominent career and is known for defeating every champion from 135 to 145 pounds. During her reign, she secured two victories over Peña, including a decisive win in their title rematch, which saw her earn a 50-43 score on one judge’s card.

As Nunes attended the UFC 316 press conference, she received a warm reception from the crowd when her image appeared on screen. UFC CEO Dana White was asked about her potential return, to which he pointed to Nunes and stated, “She just said yes,” as she nodded in agreement.

Peña, who has openly expressed her desire for a trilogy fight with Nunes, said, “I knew she was retiring too early… She’s not done. She’s just sitting on the sidelines to see what happens.” Peña and Harrison’s fight at UFC 316 carries the weight of a potential future matchup with Nunes looming over it.

Meanwhile, Kayla Harrison echoed her eagerness for a clash with Nunes, saying, “Absolutely, I think Amanda and I know that’s what’s gonna happen.” This ongoing rivalry is compounded by their shared history as former training partners at American Top Team.

As the bantamweight landscape continues to evolve, the buzz around Nunes’ possible return has captured the attention of fans and fighters alike. Her decision could significantly impact the future of the division as contenders step up to claim the title she once held.

In other UFC news, Sean O’Malley is set to fight Merab Dvalishvili for the bantamweight title on June 7, despite being nine months removed from a loss to Dvalishvili. O’Malley, addressing concerns over being fast-tracked to a title shot, remarked, “I’m very grateful to the UFC to give me a rematch so quick.” He clarified that injuries, including a torn labrum sustained prior to their last bout, contributed to his previous performance.

“Thanks, Dana,” O’Malley said with a laugh when asked about the so-called ‘Dana White privilege’ surrounding his title shot. This match comes at a time when many top contenders are coming off losses, further putting the spotlight on O’Malley, who boasts one of the sport’s most vibrant social media followings.
