American Idol Season 23: Stars Align for a New Era

LOS ANGELES, California — Anticipation fills the historic Orpheum Theatre as contestants for the 23rd season of American Idol arrive for Hollywood Week, a significant milestone in the show’s competition schedule. On a bright January day, around 140 hopefuls practice their songs while superstar judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan prepare to evaluate their performances.
Underwood, who rose to fame as the winner of the show’s fourth season in 2005, reflects on her journey and the opportunity to return as a judge. “I had my Hollywood Week in this theater,” she says. “At 21 years old, I’d never been on a plane, never seen anything like this. It seemed so grand.” With nostalgia, she observes contestants, recalling her experience and recognizing the potential in newcomers. “I’ll see somebody sing and think, ‘Oooh, this is the Bo Bice of this year.’”
Rocker Bo Bice, who placed second to Underwood, contributes to this season’s emotional stakes. Underwood notes the enduring connection among the team, saying, “So many people are still very much involved. It made it feel a lot more like coming home.”
The show’s host, Ryan Seacrest, reminisces about the live announcement of Underwood’s win. “An incredible number of votes came in for her,” Seacrest recalled in a later interview, emphasizing the excitement surrounding her success. “There are things I still see in her that remind me of the first time I met her.”
When Underwood was approached to judge after former judge Katy Perry left, she felt a mix of surprise and excitement. Underwood broke the news publicly in August, stating, “To bring back one of our own, who is on the same level as the other judges, makes a statement that this show creates superstars.”
As filming for Season 23 progressed last fall in cities like New York, Nashville, and Los Angeles, Underwood quickly bonded with her fellow judges Richie and Bryan over long days of auditions and camaraderie. The judges have enjoyed sharing personal moments, including Underwood’s homemade treats from her Tennessee farm. “It was just one of those refreshing moments,” Richie recalled. “We couldn’t stop eating!”
Regarding the judging process, Richie and Bryan discussed how they approach the contestants with care. “We get so invested in their stories and lives that we almost become the parents,” Bryan said. “We are really careful with how we interact with these kids, not being overly harsh or critical.”
This season, fans can expect a variety of musical styles from contestants, as Bryan emphasizes the importance of representation. “All of these kids coming through the door are a direct representative of what America is about. They come from all different backgrounds.”
Richie adds a perspective on what distinguishes a standout performer: “You can hear the same song over and over, and then this person walks out and makes that song sound like it’s the first time you’ve heard it.” Promising talent is evident to all three judges; Underwood jokingly remarked, “I’ve seen some people, and I’m like, ‘I’m glad you weren’t born when I was trying out!’”
The highlight of this season’s premiere, airing on March 9, will showcase the culmination of all the past auditions. A special preview aired immediately following the Oscars on March 2, heightening excitement for the upcoming two-hour episode.
Underwood’s return also highlights a broader evolution of American Idol’s culture, shifting away from harsh critiques towards a nurtured approach for contestants. Reflecting on her own experience, Underwood commented, “It was a different time in the show—in the world in general—and there was a decent chance you might get super-duper humiliated in front of tens of millions of people.” Underwood expressed hope that contestants now will leave with valuable feedback.
In conclusion, the 23rd season of American Idol promises a vibrant mix of talent and heart from its new judges. “If they go through, fantastic, but if they don’t, we want to build them up enough so they can go out and try again,” Richie remarked.
