American Promise Thoroughbred Racehorse Kentucky Derby 2025

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — At 89 years old, D. Wayne Lukas is set to make history at the 2025 Kentucky Derby with his horse, American Promise. The colt enters the race as a live longshot after his record-setting victory at the Virginia Derby on May 3, where he won by almost eight lengths.

If American Promise triumphs in the Run for the Roses, Lukas would claim his fifth Kentucky Derby victory and become the oldest trainer to ever win the race. The anticipation builds as fans prepare for the 151st Kentucky Derby, set for this Saturday.

American Promise boasts impressive lineage, being a son of 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify and a Tapit mare, making him a product of horse racing royalty. He sold for $750,000 at auction two years ago. The colt stands tall at 17 hands and required time to find his footing, not breaking his maiden until his sixth race, where he achieved a 95 Beyer Speed Figure.

After two less-than-stellar races in the Southwest and Risen Star Stakes, American Promise redeemed himself with a stellar performance in the Virginia Derby. Trainer Lukas chose not to enter him in another prep race, emphasizing that the colt has shown improvement since his last win. During a brisk workout, American Promise clocked five furlongs in 59 seconds.

Lukas commented on the colt’s progression, stating, “It was as impressive a work as any horse I have ever brought to the Derby.” American Promise currently sits at odds of 30-1, but the stakes are high.

Though he lacks the early speed to challenge for the lead, Lukas expects American Promise to be among the early contenders from the No. 5 post. Lukas noted that a good start will be crucial for the colt to secure a desirable position for the run.

As race day approaches, fans are eager to see if American Promise can surprise everyone and secure a place in racing history.
