Paris, France – Taylor Townsend, a 29-year-old American tennis player, called her recent health scare a blessing in disguise after winning her first-round qualifying match against Japan’s Sara Saito on Tuesday.

Townsend suffered a concussion during her doubles quarterfinal at the Miami Open in March. “It was bad immediately,” she said, reflecting on the incident. Initially, she struggled to recall basic details about her match.

Despite playing her semifinal just three days after the injury, Townsend later realized her condition was more serious. She experienced light sensitivity, dizziness, and headaches for nearly ten days. “I couldn’t turn my head,” she added, describing the debilitating symptoms.

Prioritizing her health, Townsend took time off to recover and enjoyed moments with her son AJ and family during her break. “The universe was like, ‘Hey, we need to sit her down,’” Townsend joked. “It was almost a blessing in disguise.”

Now symptom-free and energized, Townsend hopes to rebuild her game during the clay season, aiming to return to the top 50 by summer. “I’ve always enjoyed playing on clay; it allows me to get back into longer rallies and better shot discipline,” she stated.

Confidence is high for Townsend, who debuted in the top 50 last August and found success in her previous season. “It was a confirmation that I can do it,” she explained, referring to her three top-15 wins and a major doubles title at Wimbledon.

Another factor in her comeback is her relationship with coach John Williams. Townsend describes their bond as deeper than just tennis, highlighting the trust she has in him. “I know he’s leading me in the right direction,” she said.

With a newfound sense of determination, Townsend expressed her commitment to her career. “Just keep working, just keep going,” she said, echoing her and Williams’ mantra, “Just keep pounding the stone. You never know which blow is going to make it crack open.”

The Roland-Garros 2025 Opening Week is underway, with tickets available for fans to witness the excitement.
