Andhra Pacer Satyanarayana Raju Makes IPL Debut with Mumbai Indians

CHENNAI, India — Andhra pacer Satyanarayana Raju made his professional debut for the Mumbai Indians in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 opener against the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. The 25-year-old was included in the starting lineup after being acquired for a base price of ₹30 lakh during the IPL mega auction in Saudi Arabia last November.
Raju has quickly risen through the ranks, gaining recognition for his standout performances in various domestic leagues. He gained prominence during the 2024 Andhra Premier League playing for the Rayalaseema Kings, where he took eight wickets in seven matches with an impressive economy rate of 6.15.
His success continued in the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he showcased his bowling prowess by securing seven wickets in seven games, averaging 26.85 with an economy rate of 8.23. Raju also made significant contributions to his state team in the Ranji Trophy during the 2024/25 season, claiming 16 wickets in six matches at an average of 30.18.
“It’s been a dream six months for me. Getting picked by Mumbai Indians was the highlight, and I’m thrilled to make my debut,” Raju said ahead of the game. His inclusion in the first XI was facilitated by the unavailability of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, creating an opportunity for the emerging talent.
As the match unfolded, Raju joined a lineup featuring seasoned players such as Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar. Both bowlers are expected to guide the young pacer through his inaugural IPL journey.
The match began with Chennai Super Kings winning the toss and opting to bat first. This game marks an important milestone for Raju and a test of his skills at one of cricket’s most prestigious platforms.
For the Mumbai Indians, Raju’s debut is part of their broader strategy of integrating young talent into the team. The franchise has historically been known for nurturing and developing up-and-coming players, a plan that appears to be in motion with Raju’s selection.
Raju’s first appearance in India’s top cricketing league is eagerly anticipated by fans and analysts alike. His journey through the competitive landscape of domestic cricket and into the Indian Premier League reflects both his talent and dedication to the sport.
The Mumbai Indians are looking to reclaim their championship title in IPL 2025, and the inclusion of rising stars like Raju may prove crucial in their campaign. As this season progresses, all eyes will be on him to see if he can deliver under pressure in one of the sport’s most competitive environments.
