D’Angelo Russell Joins Dallas Mavericks Amid Backcourt Shuffle

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks made a significant move in their backcourt by signing guard D’Angelo Russell to a two-year deal worth nearly $11.7 million on Monday. This agreement comes as the team navigates personnel changes ahead of the 2025–26 NBA season.
Russell, who previously played with the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets, is expected to fill a crucial role while Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving recovers from a torn ACL. At 29 years old, he averaged 12.6 points, 5.1 assists, and 2.8 rebounds last season but faced challenges with shooting efficiency.
Despite these issues, Dallas considers Russell a potential bounce-back candidate in a more structured offense. Maverick assistant general manager Matt Riccardi worked with Russell during his All-Star season, solidifying their connection as the team seeks stability in the backcourt.
The Mavericks also recently lost backup point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, who signed a one-year deal with the Charlotte Hornets. Dinwiddie averaged 11 points and 4.4 assists in Dallas but was not expected to return after experiencing a turbulent season. His absence adds to the pressure on the Mavericks to reinforce their guard lineup.
Alongside Russell, Dante Exum is also a focal point of the Mavericks’ plans, as the team shows interest in re-signing him. If Dallas moves a current player, it could clear the necessary space in their roster.
The upcoming free agency period will test the Mavericks’ ability to strategically manage their roster as they aim for playoff contention with a new-look team this season. Dallas will open the season with Russell, potentially paired with Exum, as they seek to build depth behind Irving and create a competitive backcourt.
