Angels Designate Tim Anderson for Assignment After Struggles

Anaheim, California – The Los Angeles Angels have designated Tim Anderson for assignment as part of a series of roster changes made today. The move follows a disappointing performance from the two-time All-Star, who struggled to make an impact during his short tenure with the team.
Anderson, 31, signed a minor league contract with the Angels in January 2025 but saw limited success on the field. In 31 games this season, he batted .205 with 17 hits and just three extra-base hits, including two doubles. His overall offensive production culminated in a .499 OPS with three RBIs and 29 strikeouts over 90 plate appearances.
In response to Anderson’s struggles, the Angels have also selected the contract of infielder Scott Kingery from Triple-A Salt Lake and reinstated right-hander Justin Stephenson from the 60-day injured list. To make space on the active roster, left-hander Jake Eder has been optioned to Salt Lake, and catcher Chuckie Robinson has been designated for assignment.
Anderson was once regarded as one of the top shortstops in Major League Baseball, earning accolades such as the American League batting title in 2019 and a Silver Slugger award in 2020. However, his recent performance carried over from a difficult 2023 season with the Chicago White Sox, where he posted a low .582 OPS and a negative WAR.
Now designated for assignment, Anderson has the option to clear waivers and return to the minor leagues or explore free agency. He will likely face challenges in finding interest from other teams due to his steep decline in form.
As the Angels look toward the future, the team hopes that Kingery’s successful stint at Triple-A, where he boasts a .373 batting average, will provide a spark. Meanwhile, Stephenson is anticipated to bolster the struggling bullpen, which currently holds the highest ERA in the league.
Anderson’s future remains uncertain, as he attempts to navigate the difficulties that have plagued his career since significant injuries derailed his early successes.
