Los Angeles Angels Boston Red Sox Baseball Game

BOSTON, Massachusetts — The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-3 in 10 innings on Tuesday night, thanks to a dramatic groundout by Taylor Ward. An automatic runner scored on Ward’s bases-loaded double play groundout, securing the win for the Angels.

This victory marked consecutive wins for Los Angeles for the first time since they capped an eight-game win streak on May 23. Nolan Schanuel drove in two runs, while Zach Neto contributed two hits and an RBI.

Kenley Jansen (1-2) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win, while Reid Detmers recorded his first save of the season. Detmers became only the third pitcher in Angels history to have a no-hitter and a save, joining the ranks of Nolan Ryan and Mike Witt.

In the 10th inning, Schanuel started with a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled by Red Sox reliever Zack Kelly (1-2), allowing Neto to advance to third base. Mike Trout then walked, loading the bases for Ward. Though Ward grounded into a double play, it allowed Neto to score and push the Angels ahead.

For Boston, Ceddanne Rafaela was a standout, driving in two runs with a powerful home run in the sixth inning that tied the game at 3-3. Jarren Duran also added an RBI, but the Red Sox struggled, losing for the eighth time in their last ten games.

Los Angeles starter Yusei Kikuchi allowed three runs over five innings, striking out five batters, which included his 900th career strikeout. On the other hand, Boston’s Brayan Bello pitched six innings, giving up three runs while managing to end a streak of five consecutive games without completing five innings.

Boston now holds a disappointing record of 6-17 in one-run games this season. The teams will face off again soon, with Angels right-hander José Soriano (4-5, 3.41 ERA) set to take on Red Sox righty Lucas Giolito (1-1, 4.78) in the series finale.
