Angels Recall Caden Dana as Ryan Johnson Heads to Paternity List

ANAHEIM, California — The Los Angeles Angels recalled right-handed pitcher Caden Dana from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, marking a strategic move as right-handed pitcher Ryan Johnson goes on the paternity list.
Dana, 21, is the No. 76 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline and ranks as the Angels’ No. 2 prospect, following 2024 first-round pick Christian Moore. He excelled in Double-A last season, throwing 135 2/3 innings with a 2.52 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 147 strikeouts.
After making his MLB debut in September, Dana pitched six innings in his first start against the Seattle Mariners, allowing just two runs on two hits while striking out four batters. However, he faced challenges in his following two outings, giving up nine earned runs over 4 1/3 innings.
With the Angels’ starting rotation currently strong, leading MLB in quality starts, Dana is expected to enter a less pressured situation this time. He will temporarily fill Johnson’s spot in the bullpen, as the team navigates a taxing schedule with several recent long games.
In his first start of the 2025 season for Triple-A, Dana allowed one earned run across four innings, adding four strikeouts. Although his exact role with the Angels is uncertain, he is likely to contribute to the bullpen unless an injury arises among the starting five.
The team’s official announcement regarding Dana’s roster position is anticipated soon as they prepare for a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians.
