ANAHEIM, California — The Los Angeles Angels will look for a new manager for the 2026 season, following the decision not to pick up Ron Washington’s contract option. A team source confirmed the news to The Athletic on September 30, 2025.

Washington, who managed the Angels for over a season, stepped down from his position in June to undergo quadruple bypass surgery. Though he has indicated a desire to continue managing, he will not return to the Angels next year. Interim manager Ray Montgomery, who took over the team in Washington’s absence, is also not expected to return.

Under Washington’s leadership, the Angels ended the 2025 season with a 72-90 record, missing the playoffs for the 11th consecutive year. The team has struggled to achieve a winning record since 2015 and sees a significant challenge ahead as it looks to rebuild.

Washington, 73, expressed his hopes for a return during recovery, stating, “I feel great, I really do. I’ll let them decide if I’m the guy to lead the club.” He has made it clear that he prefers a hands-on role over a front office position.

In contrast, general manager Perry Minasian’s status remains uncertain, as he has one year left on his contract. The team has not scheduled its end-of-season press conference, which may provide clarity on the management situation soon.

Montgomery previously served as a scouting director for the Brewers and Diamondbacks before joining the Angels as bench coach. He could remain with the organization in a different role if Minasian is retained.

As the Angels contemplate their direction, they also face the possibility of a significant overhaul after multiple losing seasons. The franchise’s inability to reach the playoffs since 2014 adds pressure on ownership and management to consider new strategies moving forward.
