Anthony Edwards Faces Suspension Following Ejection in Lakers Game

LOS ANGELES — Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards will sit out one game following his ejection during the team’s 111-102 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night. Edwards received his 16th technical foul of the season during the third quarter, resulting in an automatic suspension under NBA rules.
During a tense matchup defined by escalating tensions, Edwards was tossed from the game after receiving his second technical foul for directing profanity at an official. This incident occurred after he believed he was fouled by Lakers guard Gabe Vincent while driving to the basket. Timberwolves coach Chris Finch expressed frustration about the situation but noted that it is ultimately up to Edwards to manage his reactions. “He’s got to be better. He’s had too many outbursts. I think a lot of them are deserved. They’re going to miss some calls from time to time for sure. We’ve been talking to him about it. It’s on him,” Finch said.
Edwards was ejected with 5:21 remaining in the third quarter, leaving the Timberwolves trailing 74-59. The team managed to rally late in the fourth, narrowing the gap to just three points before ultimately falling short. Edwards recorded 18 points, along with six rebounds and five assists in 26 minutes before being ejected.
After previous altercations, Edwards earned a technical foul at the end of the first quarter after a confrontation with Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt, who also received a technical for the pushing match. Crew chief James Williams provided clarity on the situation, stating, “Edwards received his second technical for directing profanity toward an official.”
The Timberwolves are currently tied for eighth place in the Western Conference alongside the Dallas Mavericks, putting them in a precarious position as the playoff race heats up. With a record of 32-28, they are in danger of missing the postseason entirely after having reached the Western Conference Finals just a season prior. Edwards’ performance has been crucial, as he ranks fourth in the league with an average of 27.3 points per game. Losing him to suspension, even for just one game, could hinder their efforts significantly.
Next up, Minnesota is set to face the last-place Utah Jazz on Friday night in Salt Lake City. Coach Finch and the team will have to strategize accordingly while also hoping that Edwards can rein in his temper. Edwards has already faced criticism for his behavior this season, with ongoing discussions about managing his emotions on the court.
The suspension will serve as a key moment for Edwards, who will look to return on Sunday against the Phoenix Suns, where the Timberwolves will need his scoring prowess and composure.
