TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona guard KJ Lewis has officially entered the transfer portal two days after the Wildcats’ defeat to top-seeded Duke in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The sophomore from El Paso, Texas, becomes the first player to announce his departure following the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, according to Jeff Borzello of ESPN.

Lewis had a notable season, averaging 10.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.9 assists while participating in all 37 games. In six postseason matches, his performance improved, with averages of 12.2 points and 5.2 rebounds in just over 25 minutes of play per game. However, his last game against Duke was subdued, where he managed only six points on 3-of-9 shooting in 21 minutes.

Arizona, who finished the season with a 24-13 record, is already facing a major transition as the team is also expected to lose other key players, notably Caleb Love and Oakland transfer Trey Townsend, who are both out of eligibility. Head coach Tommy Lloyd now faces challenges in rebuilding the roster for the upcoming year.

Amidst the departures, Arizona received some good news this week as local basketball standout Dwayne Aristode committed to the Wildcats. The four-star prospect from Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, is anticipated to contribute significantly next season. Additionally, Bryce James, son of NBA star LeBron James, also committed to Arizona earlier in January.

As the transfer portal continues to evolve college basketball dynamics, the opening round saw over 700 players enter the portal. Arizona will need to act swiftly to fill the gaps left by departing players as they prepare for the 2025-26 season. According to Borzello, Lewis was regarded as one of the best sixth men in college basketball during his tenure.
