Armed Road Rage Incident Prompts Search in Southington

SOUTHINGTON, CT — State police are searching for a suspect in connection with an armed road rage incident that occurred on Interstate 84 in Waterbury early Tuesday morning. Authorities confirmed there is no active threat to the community.
The investigation began when state troopers responded to reports of a road rage incident involving a firearm at approximately 8:42 a.m. on I-84 West near exit 17. Troopers quickly initiated a search for the suspect, believed to have fled the scene, and subsequently found the suspect’s vehicle abandoned at a rest area in Southington.
In response to the ongoing investigation, state police blocked off the I-84 East rest area in Southington. The precautionary measures extended to three local schools: Oshana Elementary, Strong Elementary, and Kennedy Middle School, which were placed in secure mode as a safety measure before returning to normal operations later.
“I hope they find them and that no one gets hurt,” said Joe Shurkus, a Southington resident living near the rest area. “I know it exists and you have to be careful if you become enraged because a person in the other car might have a weapon.”
State police reported that they deployed K-9 units and a helicopter to assist in the search for the suspect, who was last seen wearing a black shirt and jacket. Despite these efforts, the suspect remains at large, and no arrests have been made.
Authorities described the scene as still active well into the afternoon, stating that a trooper’s cruiser was struck during the incident; however, no injuries were reported among law enforcement.
In a statement, Connecticut Senators Tony Hwang, Eric Berthel, Rob Sampson, and Stephen Harding condemned the violent behavior displayed during the incident. “Our thoughts are with the victim of this senseless attack, and we are grateful for her safety. It’s time to stiffen penalties for these violent crimes,” they said. “Public safety demands it.”
As of now, no additional information has been provided about the suspect or further developments in the case. Authorities continue to monitor the area as they search for the individual involved in this alarming incident.
The investigation remains ongoing, and state police urge anyone with information to come forward. Residents are advised to stay vigilant.
