Army Ten-Miler Race Faces Uncertainty Amid Ongoing Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON — The ongoing government shutdown is affecting events beyond governmental operations, including the highly anticipated 41st annual Army Ten-Miler. Scheduled for this Sunday, the race attracts over 35,000 runners and 900 teams from around the world.
Tim Hughes, community lead for social runs and community events at Pacers Running, noted the significance of this race as athletes prepare for upcoming challenges. “Many people are using the Army Ten-Miler as a shakeout, tune-up run in preparation for Marine Corps,” said Hughes.
Pacers Running has been organizing training sessions, leading over 200 participants in a 19-week program specifically designed for the Marine Corps Marathon on October 26, which may also be impacted by the shutdown. “There’s some stress certainly to it. Right. Is our training going to not matter?” Hughes added.
Race Director Matt Zimmerman sent an update to runners stating, “A decision of whether to cancel the in-person Army Ten-Miler race based on unforeseen circumstances will be made no later than October 8th, 2025.” He assured participants they would be notified promptly about the decision. The Army Ten-Miler Virtual Race will proceed as planned.
David Neuman, a participant who has run the race for three consecutive years, expressed his concerns related to the shutdown. “It’s the last race in my season this fall. I just came off the D.C. Half. I was looking at this as kind of a way to cap off race season,” Neuman explained.
For many, training for the race is both a physical and mental commitment. “I’ve been training for it. I used to do races previously, and this Ten-Miler is kind of the reason I started getting back into running this year,” said Eunice Yoo. Despite the uncertainty, she remains optimistic, stating, “I still plan on running 10 miles, whether or not it’s shut down.”
If the in-person race is cancelled, runner registration fees will be refunded, providing some assurance for those who have been training diligently.
