Arsenal Eyes Lille Striker Jonathan David in January Transfer Move
LILLE, France — Arsenal is reportedly considering a January move for Lille striker Jonathan David as the Premier League club seeks to bolster its attacking options following Gabriel Jesus‘ season-ending injury. The 25-year-old Canadian international, who has entered the final six months of his contract, is also on the radar of Newcastle United.
According to sources, Arsenal is prioritizing a striker signing before the January transfer window closes on February 3. However, the club is unlikely to pursue a high-profile deal and may instead focus on cost-effective options like David. The Gunners have reportedly shortlisted David alongside other targets, including Alexander Isak, Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha.
David has been in stellar form this season, scoring 11 goals in 18 Ligue 1 appearances and netting five times in seven Champions League games. His performances have made him a key figure for Lille, who are currently fifth in Ligue 1 and pushing for European qualification. Despite his contract situation, Lille president Olivier Letaing has reportedly rejected a £10 million bid, valuing David’s contribution to their Champions League ambitions at £40 million.
“What am I waiting for? I guess now it’s easier to say. I’m in the last year of my contract,” David said earlier this season. “Eventually my contract is going to run out. So then we’ll see. I’m open to anything.”
Arsenal could also see departures in the coming months, with full-backs Kieran Tierney and Oleksandr Zinchenko attracting interest from Celtic, Atletico Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund. Meanwhile, David’s potential arrival could provide a much-needed boost to Arsenal’s attack as they aim to maintain their Premier League title challenge.
David’s stats this season highlight his impact: 18 goals and seven assists in 31 appearances across all competitions, averaging a goal every 141 minutes. His versatility and goal-scoring prowess make him an attractive option for clubs seeking a proven striker at a reasonable price.
As the transfer deadline approaches, all eyes will be on whether Arsenal can secure a deal for David or if Lille will hold firm until the summer, when the forward could leave on a free transfer.
