Arsenal to Part Ways with Thomas Partey as Contract Nears End
Arsenal is set to remove Thomas Partey from its wage bill as the Ghanaian midfielder’s contract expires in June 2025, according to reports. The club has decided against renewing his £150,000-a-week deal, signaling a potential overhaul of its squad ahead of the summer transfer window.
Partey, who joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in 2020, has been a key figure in the team’s midfield when fit. However, injuries have plagued his time in North London, limiting his consistency. This season, the 31-year-old has shown glimpses of his best form, but the club appears ready to move on.
In addition to Partey, Arsenal is reportedly open to offers for Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus, both of whom arrived from Manchester City in 2022. The potential exits of these players could free up significant funds for new signings, with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak emerging as a top target.
Isak, who has scored 15 goals and provided four assists in all competitions this season, impressed Arsenal fans during Newcastle’s 2-0 victory at the Emirates on January 7, 2025. His consistent performances have made him one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe.
However, Arsenal’s financial constraints mean they must offload high-earning players before pursuing Isak. Partey’s departure is seen as a necessary step to balance the books. “The club cannot afford to sign Isak without making room in the wage bill,” a source close to the club told Football Insider.
Partey’s potential exit has drawn comparisons to Granit Xhaka‘s departure in 2023, which left a void in Arsenal’s midfield. While Partey has been instrumental this season, the club appears willing to take the risk of losing him on a free transfer rather than offering a new contract.
Arsenal’s focus now shifts to identifying replacements and strengthening the squad. With injuries affecting key players like Bukayo Saka, the club may prioritize signing a winger in the January transfer window. The coming months will be crucial as Arsenal aims to remain competitive in the Premier League and European competitions.
