Arsenal Upsets Barcelona to Win Women’s Champions League

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Arsenal stunned FC Barcelona 1-0 on Saturday to claim the Women’s Champions League title for the second time in their history.
Stina Blackstenius scored the winning goal in the 75th minute, assisted by her substitute teammate Beth Mead, at the Estádio José Alvalade. This victory comes 18 years after Arsenal became the first — and still the only — English club to lift the most prestigious trophy in women’s club football.
Arsenal’s players embraced and celebrated in front of the jubilant red and white section of the stands, surrounded by fans clad in maroon and blue. Barcelona, the reigning champions, were considered the favorites and aimed for their fourth trophy in five years. They wanted to join the ranks of exclusive clubs with three consecutive titles.
Barcelona entered the match with a brilliant record, winning nine consecutive games in the competition, including dominations over Wolfsburg and English champions Chelsea in the knockout rounds. However, Arsenal focused on solid defense throughout the match, creating more opportunities.
The Barcelona goalkeeper, Cata Coll, made two stunning saves to deny Frida Maanum and Blackstenius. It was not until Blackstenius finally found the back of the net that the stalemate was broken.
The victory ends a turbulent season for Arsenal, including the resignation of coach Jonas Eidevall and the promotion of assistant Renée Seglers. Under Seglers, Arsenal has thrived in Europe, building momentum from comeback victories against Real Madrid and eight-time champions Lyon, leading up to their historic final.
Barcelona’s closest chance came from a Claudia Pina shot that hit the crossbar shortly after the break, their best period in the match. Overall, the game favored Arsenal’s gameplay, culminating in their hard-fought victory. The triumph highlights their resilience and determination throughout the tournament.
