Arsenal Women Secure Victory Against A-League All Stars Women in Melbourne
Arsenal Women’s first team emerged victorious with a 1-0 win against A-League All Stars Women in a post-season friendly held at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium. The lone goal came late in the first half from a spectacular header by Alessia Russo off a precise cross from Vivienne Lia.
In the initial period, Arsenal dominated possession, with Victoria Pelova coming close to scoring after winning the ball in a threatening position. However, Russo’s subsequent strike was disallowed due to a foul. The All Stars had their first scoring opportunity in the 28th minute as Tameka Yallop shot over the bar from Elise Kellond-Knight‘s corner.
Cortnee Vine‘s attempt from the right failed to trouble Arsenal goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi. The first half concluded with Academy graduate Vivienne Lia supplying a pinpoint delivery from the right-wing to set up Russo’s decisive header.
Arsenal made a series of strategic substitutions at half-time, with Emily Fox, Teyah Goldie, Frida Maanum, and Cloe Lacasse replacing some key players. Caitlin Foord tested the A-League’s defense early in the second half, but her shot was saved.
With half an hour to go, goalkeeper Bouhaddi was replaced by Naomi Williams. Caitlin Foord persistently pressed for another goal, but the All-Stars managed to thwart her attempts. Meanwhile, Rhianna Pollicina tried her luck, but Williams made a crucial save, denying the All Stars a potential equalizer in the final minutes of the game.
The match concluded with Arsenal maintaining their lead and ending the season on a positive note. Both teams displayed commendable performances, entertaining the 42,120 fans present at the stadium.
