Astros Designate Former Top Prospect Forrest Whitley for Assignment

HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Astros made a significant roster move on Sunday by designating right-hander Forrest Whitley for assignment. This decision came as the team recalled left-hander Brandon Walter from Triple-A Sugar Land, marking another twist in Whitley’s tumultuous career.
Once regarded as a premier pitching prospect after being drafted 17th overall in the 2016 MLB Draft, Whitley faced numerous obstacles that derailed his ascent. Injuries and a 50-game suspension in 2018 hindered his progress, forcing him to miss valuable playing time. His road to recovery was further complicated by a Tommy John surgery, which kept him off the mound for over 21 months.
After returning, Whitley showed flashes of his former potential, particularly this season, where he recorded a 1.89 ERA over 33 1/3 relief innings with Round Rock. However, recurring injuries, including a bone bruise and sprain in his left knee, limited his appearances for the Astros, resulting in a disappointing 12.27 ERA over 7 1/3 innings.
The Astros’ decision to designate Whitley signals a shift in focus for the organization. With Whitley out of options, they were faced with a choice: either expose him to waivers or keep him on the 40-man roster. If he clears waivers, Whitley could return to Sugar Land, but given his struggles, it might be a point of no return for his career with the Astros.
As Whitley, now 27, enters this uncertain period, other teams may see potential in him and consider claiming him. He still possesses high-velocity pitches, like a fastball reaching 96.3 mph, that could appeal to franchises looking for late-bloomers among their pitching staff. Whitley’s journey underscores the unpredictable nature of a career in professional sports, as he seeks to redefine his path.
