Athletics Honor Rickey Henderson with Special Tribute on Opening Day

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics will pay tribute to Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson by having all players wear his iconic No. 24 jersey during their home opener against the Chicago Cubs on March 31, 2025. This significant gesture serves to honor Henderson, widely regarded as the greatest leadoff hitter in Major League Baseball (MLB) history, as the A’s shift their home games to Sutter Health Park in Sacramento amid ongoing relocation plans.
Henderson, who was raised in Oakland, left a lasting impact on both the Athletics and the sport as a whole. During his career, he amassed numerous franchise records, including 1,270 runs scored, 1,227 walks, and 867 stolen bases. He also holds the MLB record for career stolen bases (1,406) and is recognized for his dynamic play that transcended the game.
On the team’s decision to wear No. 24, Athletics management stated, “In a tribute to Rickey Henderson, the greatest to ever wear the green and gold, every A’s player will wear Rickey’s number 24 on their backs during the game.” Additionally, Henderson’s daughters will throw out simultaneous ceremonial first pitches to commemorate their father’s legacy.
The A’s planned several giveaways for the home opener, including a Rickey Henderson rally towel and a trucker hat featuring the new Sacramento jersey patch logo. These items serve not only as tributes but also as memorabilia for fans attending the first game in the team’s temporary home.
“It’s a fitting tribute that would have hit all the right notes, had the team still been at the Coliseum for the occasion,” said long-time A’s blogger and fan Jason. “With the team in Sacramento, it feels a bit off, but given the upheaval, it’s good they are recognizing their history.”
The tribute to Henderson coincides with a new chapter for the Athletics after they left Oakland, where the team had played since 1968. Their previous home, Oakland Coliseum, hosted its final game in September 2024, capping off a long history with a win over the Texas Rangers.
As the A’s step onto the field for their home opener, they will not only highlight Henderson’s significance to the franchise but also signal their continued commitment to recognizing their roots in Oakland. The event is anticipated to draw significant fanfare, featuring performances that include local artists and a special flyover from Beale Air Force Base.
While the home opener is officially sold out, the team will offer an additional 250 lawn seats priced at $25 for all home games, allowing more fans the opportunity to be a part of this historic moment.
