Atlanta United Prepares for NYCFC Match Amid Squad Changes

ATLANTA, Ga. — Head coach Ronny Deila hinted at potential squad changes for Atlanta United‘s Thursday match against New York City FC. This comes after the recent FIFA international window that affected their player availability.
In a media session on Tuesday, Deila reflected on how the team managed squad rotation during their last game affected by international play, which was on March 22 against FC Cincinnati. He noted that with many players competing in international matches earlier this week, similar adjustments might be necessary.
“We have to see tonight how much they play,” Deila stated following Tuesday’s training. “We need to put up our team in the best shape as possible with what is available. The good thing is that we have other players now to get opportunities. Last time we gave them that, they did really well against Cincinnati.”
During the March match, Deila made three changes to his starting lineup. Given the circumstances now, there could be more adjustments as Atlanta United seeks their first road win of the season. The match against NYCFC is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on June 12.
Atlanta’s injury list remains a concern, with five players sidelined, including Stian Gregersen and Tristan Muyumba. Edwin Mosquera was also reported as out with a minor adductor injury, described by Deila as “small.”
In addition to managing injured players, the club is bringing in reinforcements. Cooper Sanchez and Nyk Sessock will join the squad on Short-Term Agreements after previously being called up for the March match against Cincinnati. According to MLS roster rules, clubs can sign a maximum of four Short-Term Agreements each season, marking the second for both Sanchez and Sessock.
The addition of these players reflects Atlanta United’s emphasis on depth, showing flexibility as they look to build on their last successful squad rotation.
