Atlético Madrid Dominates Salzburg 3-0 in Champions League Clash
SALZBURG, Austria — Atlético Madrid secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Red Bull Salzburg in their final Champions League group stage match on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at the Red Bull Arena. The win ensures their place in the knockout stages of the competition.
Antoine Griezmann starred with a brace, scoring in the 13th and 45+1 minutes, while Giuliano Simeone opened the scoring early in the 4th minute. Atlético dominated possession and showcased their attacking prowess, leaving Salzburg struggling to keep pace.
“We came here with a clear plan, and the players executed it perfectly,” said Atlético manager Diego Simeone. “Griezmann and Giuliano were exceptional, but this was a team effort.”
Salzburg, already eliminated from the competition, failed to capitalize on their limited chances. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak made crucial saves, including a standout stop against Oscar Glouck in the 38th minute, to preserve the clean sheet.
Atlético’s midfield, led by Koke and Rodrigo De Paul, controlled the tempo, while the defense, anchored by Le Normand and Lenglet, remained resolute. The visitors finished the group stage with five wins and one draw, topping their group.
Salzburg, on the other hand, ended their campaign without a single point at home, setting an unwanted Champions League record. “It’s a disappointing result, but we’ll learn from this experience,” said Salzburg coach Thomas Letsch.
With the win, Atlético advances to the Round of 16, while Salzburg exits the competition, finishing at the bottom of their group.
