Atletico Madrid Inter Milan Friendly Match Libya

BENGHAZI, LibyaAtletico Madrid is set to play a friendly match against Inter Milan on October 14, 2023, at the Benghazi International Stadium. This match comes after FC Barcelona withdrew from the event over security concerns.

The friendly is part of the Reconstruction Cup-FDRL, aimed at promoting peace and goodwill in Libya, a country still recovering from years of political turmoil. Barcelona had initially planned to participate but opted out after evaluating the risks associated with the safety of their players and staff.

Barcelona had received €5 million ($5.3 million) for their involvement, which they will now return. Their decision was influenced by warnings from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, advising against travel to Libya due to safety issues related to crime and civil unrest.

Following Barcelona’s exit, Atletico Madrid agreed to step in, reportedly receiving €3.5 million ($3.7 million) for the game. The team is expected to arrive in Benghazi on the day of the match, playing the game before immediately returning back to Madrid.

Libya’s national football scene has faced significant challenges, with its best performance in international tournaments being a runner-up finish in the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite these hurdles, football remains the most popular sport in the country.

The friendly match is anticipated to draw considerable attention, with local businesses hoping for an economic boost from the influx of visitors and media coverage. Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann expressed the hope that the game could help bring visibility to the ongoing struggles of Libyan society, stating, “Playing in Libya is not just about football; it’s about showing solidarity and hope.”

Inter Milan’s management also assured that they are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of players and fans at the event. The match will feature star players from both clubs and aims to be a celebration of football and its ability to unite.
