Atlético Pursues Tottenham’s Cuti Romero Amid Transfer Rumors

MADRID, Spain — As the current football season nears its climax, clubs are already strategizing for the next season, including Atlético Madrid, which is reportedly eyeing a move for Argentine central defender Cristian “Cuti” Romero from Tottenham Hotspur.
Romero, 26, has been a longstanding target for Atlético, especially since the club considered signing him from Atalanta three years ago. However, that opportunity slipped away when he signed with Tottenham for €52 million. Recent reports from Argentine media outlets suggest that Atlético’s head coach, Diego Simeone, has given the green light for the club to pursue Romero.
Despite being on the radar of several top clubs, Romero is currently facing challenges at Tottenham, where he has not played since early December due to injuries. The defender dealt with a foot injury followed by hamstring issues, which sidelined him for over four months. According to reports, he recently expressed concerns about the club’s ambitions, highlighting rival teams like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea for their consistent squad investments.
“I would say there are no comments, but you see City competing every year, and Liverpool and Chelsea reinforcing their squads,” Romero stated, which led to a reaction from Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou, who mentioned that he spoke to Romero about his comments. “He apologized for the way he addressed it, specifically in public,” Postecoglou added.
Atlético’s strategy seems to heavily involve players from Argentina, especially with their current star, Julián Alvarez, and a roster that includes Nahuel Molina, Rodrigo De Paul, and Correa, all of whom are integral parts of the squad’s success. The club further aims to capitalize on their previous ties with Romero by re-engaging discussions for his transfer.
Romero’s future prospects also gained momentum recently when his agent was spotted at the Metropolitano Stadium, although he denied any negotiations concerning his client. There seems to be an overarching sentiment that both clubs might be interested in rekindling discussions.
In related news, Dean Huijsen’s potential transfer to Real Madrid has also stirred excitement. The father of the Bournemouth player shared his enthusiasm about the prospect, following Huijsen’s recent debut for Spain in the Nations League. Huijsen, who made an immediate impact with the national team, is seen as a promising talent in Europe.
Furthermore, the market buzz includes interests from major clubs in players like Tyler Dibling from Southampton and Dion Beljo from Rapid Vienna, both of whom have shown exceptional form in their respective leagues.
As the summer transfer window approaches, clubs are gearing up for competitive bidding wars. Atlético Madrid’s focus on Romero showcases their ambitions to bolster their defense as they look to remain competitive in La Liga and European competitions.
