John Cohen Auburn Football Coach Search

AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn athletic director John Cohen announced he will lead the search for the Tigers’ next football coach after the firing of Hugh Freeze. At a press conference, Cohen emphasized, “I am the committee,” clarifying that while he will ultimately make the decision, he values input from others in the hiring process.

In a recent interview, Cohen stated that he is consulting with select individuals who can help answer candidates’ questions effectively. He noted, “If I have a former player with me… that can help them with that.” This approach includes gathering insights from former players, coaching candidates’ former teammates, and professionals from the college football broadcasting industry.

Cohen identified Bruce Pearl, former Auburn basketball coach and current special assistant to the athletic director, as a valuable resource. He also mentioned consulting with up to eight sitting head coaches regarding the position. “I would love to have a head coach within 24 hours after the Iron Bowl,” he said, adding that player input indicates they seek a coach with an “edge.”

As part of the ongoing coaching search, Cohen has hinted that names like Jon Sumrall, head coach at Tulane, are leading in discussions about the next head coach of Auburn. The urgency in the search is also dictated by the need to finalize a coach ahead of the early signing period from Dec. 3-5.

The upcoming Iron Bowl against Alabama is scheduled for Nov. 29, and before that, Auburn will host Mercer in a non-conference game. Cohen is optimistic about quick hiring to met the needs of the players and for recruiting purposes.
