Auburn’s Elite Eight Journey: The Pearls Unite for Success

ATLANTA, Ga. — As the No. 1 seed Auburn Tigers gear up for their Elite Eight matchup against No. 5 seed Michigan, a unique family dynamic propels the program forward. Steven Pearl, the son of head coach Bruce Pearl, brings fresh energy and strategies that have vastly improved the team.
After stepping away from basketball in 2011 due to burnout, Steven rekindled his passion three years later when he joined his father at Auburn. In a frank conversation, Steven expressed his desire to help Bruce turn around the program, mirroring their success in Tennessee. Bruce reminisced, “I never wanted this for you. I thought you’d be Senator Corleone. President Corleone.” But Steven’s aspirations aligned with his father’s vision.
Since joining Auburn’s coaching staff, Steven has played a significant role in the Tigers’ ascent. The team reached the Final Four during the 2018 NCAA Tournament and has continued its competitive streak. As Steven transitioned from strength coach to assistant coach, his impact grew, demonstrating a refined approach to the game.
“He brings toughness to our staff and program,” said offensive coordinator Mike Burgomaster. Auburn’s strategic evolution—pivoting to a slower pace of play—has demonstrated Steven’s analytical approach to coaching. In his first season as associate head coach and defensive coordinator, the Tigers ranked sixth in the nation for adjusted defensive efficiency.
Commenting on their close relationship, Bruce said, “I would be very fortunate to have Steven continue this work when I retire. He’s been ready for years.” With Auburn’s rise, questions are surfacing about Steven’s future role, potentially as the successor to his father.
Off the court, family ties take center stage for the Pearls. Steven and his wife, Brittany, recently welcomed their second child, Lainey, amidst a challenging journey through in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. “We put a lot of tears and work and love into creating a child,” Brittany shared, emphasizing their resilience as a couple.
As Auburn prepares to face Michigan, the dynamic duo of Bruce and Steven reflects a blend of family legacy and professional ambition. With momentum on their side, the Tigers aim not just for a spot in the Final Four but also to make a lasting mark in NCAA history.
