Auburn Alabama College Basketball Game

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Top-ranked Auburn narrowly defeated No. 2 Alabama 94-85 in a highly anticipated SEC matchup on Saturday at Coleman Coliseum. The game, which marked the first encounter between the top two teams in the nation in over three years, attracted a boisterous crowd keen to witness an unforgettable rivalry.

The Crimson Tide attempted a fierce second-half comeback but were ultimately hindered by a subpar 3-point shooting performance, making just 5 of 26 attempts from beyond the arc. Auburn established an early lead with a 3-pointer from Miles Kelly just 15 seconds into the game and maintained control throughout, only briefly relinquishing it following Alabama’s run to tie the score at 68 with 7:23 left.

“We always knew it would be a tough game,” said Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl. “Alabama is a great team and they made a strong push, but our guys showed resilience when it mattered most.”

A run of 10 unanswered points, highlighted by a dunk from Alabama forward Grant Nelson, reignited the home crowd and temporarily shifted momentum. However, the Tigers quickly answered with a string of their own points, notably a crucial 3-pointer from freshman guard Tahaad Pettiford.

Pettiford’s late-game heroics solidified his role in the match, as he scored vital buckets down the stretch and finished with a significant contribution to Auburn’s tally. “It’s overwhelming to play in such a critical game,” Pettiford said. “We have been preparing for moments like this, and I just wanted to contribute.”

Auburn faced late-game challenges with key players Chad Baker-Mazara and Dylan Cardwell fouling out. Star center Johni Broome appeared to aggravate an existing ankle injury during the critical moments, but returned to the court and sunk a pivotal hook shot with just over a minute remaining, extending Auburn’s lead to 88-78.

Despite their struggles, Alabama pulled together a late flurry, with guard Mark Sears finding his rhythm after a rocky first half. Sears managed to score 18 points but shot only 2 of 11 from 3-point range. Coach Nate Oats noted, “We had our opportunities but couldn’t capitalize under pressure, especially outside the arc. We’ll have to regroup and learn from this game.”

This match also underscored Auburn’s defensive prowess, as they were the SEC’s best in 3-point shooting defense prior to this game. Their strategy paid dividends, limiting Alabama’s shots and effectiveness. The Tigers now position themselves for success as they move towards the final stretch of the regular season.

With the victory, Auburn continues to solidify its status as a serious contender for the NCAA championship while Alabama will look to bounce back in their upcoming games. The rivalry will continue as both teams have the opportunity to meet again later in the SEC and NCAA tournaments.
