Austin Hosts Inaugural Half Marathon Amid Cold Weather, Road Closures
AUSTIN, Texas — The city of Austin will host its first-ever half marathon Sunday, drawing athletes from around the world to compete in a 13.1-mile race. The event, formerly known as the 3M Half Marathon, begins at 7 a.m. in front of the Regal Gateway Theater at 9800 Stonelake Blvd.
With major roads closed for the event, traffic detours will be in place throughout the city. Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes to avoid delays. Organizers have released a detailed list of road closures to help residents navigate the area.
Weather conditions may pose a challenge for participants, as temperatures are expected to drop to around 30 degrees Saturday night, with a high of 44 degrees on Sunday. Light snow is possible Monday night and Tuesday morning, but race day is expected to remain clear. In case of inclement weather before 7:30 a.m., organizers may delay the race start by up to 45 minutes. Participants are encouraged to monitor email updates for the latest information.
The event marks a significant moment for Austin’s running community, as it transitions from the 3M Half Marathon to a new, locally organized race. Runners and spectators alike are preparing for a chilly but exciting day in the heart of downtown Austin.
