LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Austin Reaves has established himself as a key player for the Los Angeles Lakers, aiming to solidify his role as a vital component in the team’s championship aspirations. Following a remarkable season, Reaves is set to make significant decisions regarding his future in the NBA.

After signing a four-year, $54 million extension in 2023, which has since become one of the best value contracts in the league, Reaves finds himself contemplating either a lucrative extension this summer or the possibility of hitting unrestricted free agency in 2026. His current contract includes a $14.9 million option for the 2026-27 season.

Reports indicate that Reaves could opt for a four-year, $89.2 million extension, or he may choose to wait until the summer of 2026 to potentially secure a four-year deal worth $98 million. However, opting out could risk his financial future if he were to suffer an injury, as he would be eligible for 25% of the salary cap, projected to be around $38.7 million for that season.

Reaves’ performance has boosted his market value, especially during a stretch where he averaged more than 25 points per game, prompting praise from NBA executives. A Western Conference executive remarked, “He’s the best undrafted player since Ben Wallace, and that guy’s a Hall of Famer.”

In the context of the Lakers’ trajectory, Reaves has thrived alongside superstars LeBron James and Luka Dončić. Lakers vice president Rob Pelinka noted, “My theory is basketball geniuses that love to win, find ways to work and click together. And we knew LeBron… obviously Luka Doncic… and AR is coming into his own there.”

Reaves attributed his success to being on the court with top-tier players, stating, “I just want to win and I feel like anytime I’m on the court versus off the court, I have a belief I literally can change the game.”

This season, Reaves has built a reputation for his offensive prowess and playmaking ability, contributing significantly to the Lakers’ success. The team has a record of 26-8 when Reaves scores 20 points or more, illustrating his impact as they vie for a playoff spot.

Lakers ownership has expressed unwavering support for Reaves. Lakers governor Jeanie Buss stated, “The way he plays the game, fights for every ball, sacrifices his body… you can’t help but get drawn in and cheer for them.” She emphasized that Reaves has been proving himself consistently and expressed gratitude for having him on the team.

As the Lakers aim for a deep playoff run, Reaves’ ability to adapt and excel alongside elite talent may well dictate his future, both in terms of impact on the court and the financial decisions he makes regarding his career.
