Australia‘s hopes of advancing in the T20 World Cup were dashed as Afghanistan secured a historic eight-run win over Bangladesh in a rain-affected thriller in St Vincent. The defeat resulted in the 2021 champions, Australia, being eliminated from the tournament.

Earlier in the day, Australia suffered a setback in their T20 World Cup journey after a crushing defeat by India. Indian captain, Virat Kohli, played a remarkable innings of 92 from 41 deliveries, propelling India to victory.

With Afghanistan’s win over Bangladesh, Australia found themselves relying on a narrow set of scenarios to advance to the semi-finals. However, despite Bangladesh’s valiant efforts, they fell short in a tense finish, sealing Australia’s unexpected exit from the tournament.

Mitch Marsh, the captain of the Australian team, expressed disappointment at the outcome and acknowledged the impressive performance of Afghanistan in securing their spot in the semi-finals.

Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq and Rashid Khan were standout performers in the match, with Naveen-ul-Haq taking crucial wickets to secure their victory. Rahmanullah Gurbaz also made a significant contribution with the bat for Afghanistan.

The result sees Afghanistan making history by reaching the semi-finals for the first time in their international cricket journey. They are set to face South Africa in the semi-final stage, while England and India will battle it out in the other semi-final match.
