Australian All-Rounder Glenn Maxwell Under Investigation After Incident in Adelaide
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is currently under investigation by cricket authorities after an incident in Adelaide that resulted in his hospitalization. Maxwell’s removal from the upcoming one-day series due to being ‘managed’ was quickly followed by confirmation of the investigation by Cricket Australia.
The incident occurred in Adelaide, where Maxwell was present for a golf appearance following the conclusion of Australia‘s first Test against the West Indies. This came after the end of his campaign with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. The specific date was on Friday, 19th January, during a Six & Out concert. Notably, Australian captain Pat Cummins and other Test team members including Steve Smith and Alex Carey also attended the concert at The Gov, a popular live music venue in Adelaide. Six & Out is a band consisting of former cricketers Brett Lee, Shane Lee, Richard Chee Quee, Gavin Robertson, and Brad McNamara.
Although no police involvement has been reported, Cricket Australia has confirmed their intention to investigate the matter. A spokesperson for Cricket Australia stated, ‘Cricket Australia is aware of an incident involving Glenn Maxwell in Adelaide at the weekend and is seeking further information. It is not related to him being replaced in the ODI squad, a decision that was made following the BBL and based on his individual management plan. Maxwell is expected to return for the T20 series.’
Despite not having played a Test since 2017, Maxwell will be sitting out the one-day series. Meanwhile, red-ball stars such as Steve Smith, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, and Cameron Green will be participating in the white-ball games against the West Indies. This incident adds to a series of bizarre mishaps involving Maxwell, including a concussion from falling off a golf cart during the 50-over World Cup, missing a match against England, and breaking a leg while playfully chasing a friend at a birthday party, which cost him a spot in Australia’s Test squad to tour India.
