Australian Goalkeeper James Gauci Completes Move to Aston Villa
Australian goalkeeper James Gauci has finalized his transfer to English Premier League side Aston Villa, marking a significant milestone in his career. The 23-year-old shot-stopper, who previously played for Adelaide United, joins the Birmingham-based club on a four-and-a-half year contract, subject to international clearance and obtaining a visa upon his return from the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023â„¢.
Reports suggest that the deal is worth €1.5m ($2.4m AUD) plus additional performance-based add-ons. Gauci will be working under the guidance of respected coach Unai Emery, continuing his development alongside the likes of Argentinian goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who currently holds the number one spot at Villa Park.
This move sees Gauci follow in the footsteps of notable former Socceroos, including Mark Bosnich, Mile Jedinak, and Brett Holman, who have all played for Aston Villa in the past. Gauci, who has two senior caps for Australia, made his international debut in a friendly against Ecuador in March 2023. However, he was initially called up as a train-on player a year earlier when he was just 21 years old.
The talented goalkeeper has also represented his country at the U-23 level, notably featuring in the AFC U-23 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2022â„¢, where the Australian U-23 team, known as the Subway Olyroos, finished in fourth place.
Standing at an imposing height of 194cm, Gauci is expected to provide strong competition for Martinez as Villa aims to solidify their position in the Premier League. The Australian shot-stopper has enjoyed a successful stint with Adelaide United, accumulating 76 appearances and keeping 16 clean sheets during his three-and-a-half years at the club.
Gauci expressed his gratitude to the Adelaide United fans and the club’s staff and players for their support throughout his time with the Reds. He mentioned special memories such as his debut, his first home game and clean sheet, playing in finals football at Coopers Stadium, and celebrating classic away wins. Gauci also extended his best wishes to the club and hopes that their paths will cross again in the future.
Currently, Aston Villa is enjoying an impressive season and currently sits provisionally in fourth place in the Premier League standings.
