Australian Open Quarterfinals: Gauff, Sabalenka, Swiatek Eye Semifinal Spots
MELBOURNE, Australia — The 2025 Australian Open women’s singles quarterfinals are set to deliver high-stakes drama as eight players vie for a spot in the semifinals. The matches feature a mix of seasoned champions and rising stars, with No. 3 seed Coco Gauff, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, and world No. 2 Iga Swiatek leading the charge.
Gauff, the 20-year-old American, faces a tough challenge against No. 11 seed Paula Badosa. Gauff advanced to the quarterfinals after a hard-fought three-set victory over Belinda Bencic in the Round of 16. Badosa, meanwhile, has dropped only one set en route to the quarters. “Coco has shown incredible resilience, but Badosa is a formidable opponent,” said tennis analyst Greg Butyn.
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka continues her quest for a third consecutive Australian Open title. The Belarusian powerhouse will take on No. 27 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who holds a 2-1 head-to-head advantage over Sabalenka, including a win at the 2021 French Open. “Sabalenka is the favorite, but Pavlyuchenkova has the experience to challenge her,” Butyn added.
In another marquee matchup, Swiatek faces No. 8 seed Emma Navarro. Swiatek, a four-time Grand Slam champion, has yet to claim an Australian Open title. Navarro, a rising star, has battled through four consecutive three-set matches to reach her first major quarterfinal. “This is a pivotal moment for Navarro, but Swiatek’s consistency makes her the favorite,” Butyn noted.
Rounding out the quarterfinals, No. 19 seed Madison Keys takes on No. 28 seed Elina Svitolina. Keys, a former U.S. Open finalist, is seeking her first Grand Slam final since 2017. Svitolina, a two-time major semifinalist, is aiming to return to the final four for the first time since 2019. “Both players have the power and experience to make this a thrilling contest,” Butyn said.
The matches are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. local time, with Sabalenka and Pavlyuchenkova set to play at 3 a.m. ET. According to Dimers‘ predictive model, Sabalenka has an 89% chance of advancing, while Gauff and Swiatek are also heavily favored in their respective matches.
