Australian surfers Tyler Wright and Ethan Ewing reach finals at World Surf League event in Portugal
Australian surfers Tyler Wright and Ethan Ewing showcased their exceptional skills at the recent World Surf League competition held at Supertubos in Portugal.
In the women’s final, Wright faced off against French competitor Johanne Defay, ultimately conceding defeat with a score of 5.50 to Defay’s 10.83.
On the men’s side, Ewing advanced through the quarter-final and semi-final rounds, only to be bested by American surfer Griffin Colapinto in the final, with Colapinto securing victory at 17.94 to Ewing’s 11.13.
Following her earlier triumph over Tatiana Weston-Webb in the semi-finals, Wright’s runner-up position lifted her to eighth place in the overall women’s WSL rankings.
Meanwhile, fellow Aussie Molly Picklum claimed the top spot in the rankings, with Defay moving to second place after her win in Portugal, narrowing the gap between her and Picklum to 920 points.
Ewing, who had a long day of competition, managed to secure victories in the quarter-final against Ramzi Boukhiam and the semi-final against Crosby Colapinto. However, Griffin Colapinto’s stellar performance in the final denied Ewing the chance to claim the series leader’s yellow jersey.
The upcoming Olympics in Tahiti will see Ewing and Wright representing Australia in the surfing events.
As the Championship Tour moves to Australia, surf fans can look forward to seeing Ewing and Wright defend their titles at Bells Beach from March 26 before the competition heads to Western Australia for the Margaret River Pro starting on April 11.
